Our aims, methods and evaluation

Our aims on ICC implementation

Background – many States are slow to implement the ICC Statute

The Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and various international treaties criminalise genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. However, despite signing these treaties, many states are not criminalising these atrocities under their national law. In other words, the states are not implementing the treaties they ratify. In some countries this means that perpetrators are not held accountable. In all countries which fail to implement, potential perpetrators are not deterred.

Local communities as agents for change

Our activities aim to empower local communities and in particular the country’s legal community to be agents for change on national implementation of the ICC Statute.

National partnerships

The Peace and Justice Initiative aims to deliver training and awareness raising activities which are tailored to the specific legal regimes and challenges facing each target country.

This can only be achieved through the participation of local partners – NGOs, legal professional associations, teaching and human rights institutions to name but a few.

Developing the activities together with local partners ensures that:

  • activities are demand-driven
  • programs achieve wide audience reach
  • the presentation or training is pitched at an appropriate level of detail

The Peace and Justice Initiative actively seeks national partners. If you have a presence in a country which has not implemented the ICC Statute and are interested in partnering with us on achieving our objectives we would be very pleased to hear from you.

Self-replicating activities

The impact of our work is greatly enhanced if our activities become self-replicating. Thus in designing the courses, workshops and training we aim for the materials to be used for onward outreach activities.

To evaluate the success of this strategy we ask recipients of our activities to keep us updated on their onward use of the training and materials.

Evaluation

Evaluation of our activities is key to the success of our mission.

We seek feedback following any of our activities.

For global assessment of our activities in each country we will seek to apply the Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding Evaluation, developed by the DAC Network on Development.
